An Inspiring Curriculum
The Academy will be a secure place of challenge in which young people will be nurtured and developed to achieve a set of personal standards, beliefs, abilities and experiences which equip them to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work as citizens.
The Academy will develop a “learning ethos” to support the daily life of the Academy, its staff, students, parents and carers. It will develop a learning to learn philosophy to encourage self reliance and personal competence in its students. The learning community will be extended to include feeder schools, families and the wider community. Learning as a personal experience for students will be enhanced through the support of peer mentors and learning coaches working to support the individualised elements of each student’s learning programme. Learning will be an inclusive activity and families will be actively encouraged to support learning out of school hours.
The learning ethos will have a set of objectives designed into an innovative curriculum which develops the three key elements of the sponsors’ vision supporting learning, employment outcomes and citizenship. The Academy graduates will be defined by their personal qualities which reflect confidence, competence, autonomy, open mindedness, honesty, generosity of spirit and a willingness to both help others and tolerate disparate view points within their community. The Academy will be a place of care for staff, students and community; it will be a place of challenge and achievement. It will inspire its young people, enrich the life of the community and contribute to the renaissance of the city as a place of employment and prosperity for its citizens.
The Academy will be a place of progression, inspiration and safety where young people will learn about themselves, learn how to learn, learn how to work with others, and learn how to define and achieve their personal goals.
Above all the Academy will be a dynamic statement to the community and regional employers that the prospects for the young people of the region have changed and they are ready and able to serve and work in their locality.
The sponsors have chosen the two specialist areas of the curriculum to define the unique learning experience of the Academy: Business and Enterprise with Engineering with a focus on applied digital technologies to support vocational diploma courses and become a centre of excellence for their delivery. These specialisms will create exciting opportunities for partners to work alongside the sponsors in providing leading edge vocational opportunities to the students.
